Why Your Kitchen (and Your Morning Routine) Will Benefit from an Electric Kettle

Posted on

Courtesy of Fellow

If the prospect of that first pour over gets you out of bed in the morning or a cup of tea gives you the steam you need to power through the day, then maybe it’s time to get an electric kettle that can handle all of your hot drink needs. And once you have an electric kettle, you’ll understand that it does so much more than that: They also speed up the process of cooking foods like oatmeal and pasta, heating water in the blink of an eye.

Why bother with an electric model when a stovetop kettle or pot of water does the job, you ask? Electric kettles automatically shut off, a safer and more convenient option than a forgotten flame or burner. Some electric kettles also turn off the kettle when the water runs dry, so you’re not in danger of an exploding vessel.

Just in time to provide an escape from the dead leaves and chilly winds of winter, the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden is set to reopen its conservatory to the public for the first time since closing in March because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 80-foot-tall geodesic dome, a landmark for travelers crossing the Des Moines River on Interstate 235, is home to a tropical garden featuring everything from delicate orchids to towering palms.

The building, which also houses the Gardeners Show House, Garden Shop and an art exhibit, will be open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. beginning Wednesday. The Trellis Cafe is also open for limited hours.

Kelly Reilly, director of marketing for the gardens, said the staff has taken its time to ensure it can reopen the conservatory safely.

“That was the first date that we had the right protocols,

‘Cheer’ star Jerry Harris assaulted 15-year-old in public bathroom, feds allege

Posted on

Federal prosecutors say “Cheer” star Jerry Harris has “exploited and violated” at least 10 boys, “exhibits all the signs of a serial child predator” and should stay behind bars.

They also allege that Harris sexually assaulted a 15-year-old boy in an unlocked public bathroom at a cheer event “with other individuals coming and going” — suggesting either that he “wanted to be caught or he simply cannot control his impulses.”

The claims appear in a nine-page memo filed Tuesday ahead of a detention hearing for Harris, who was arrested by the FBI nearly a month ago and charged with production of child pornography. The memo also alleges that Harris destroyed his cellphone upon learning of the investigation — and then continued to “victimize minor boys” with a new one.

Harris, 21, is being held at the downtown Metropolitan Correctional Center, prison records show.

Though the original criminal complaint filed against

The baby was taken to Jamaica Hospital in critical but stable condition and treated for hypothermia.

Authorities say that Sabita Dookram, 23, gave birth to the youngster in the bath before allegedly tossing the baby from the window.

Now she faces charges that include attempted murder, attempted manslaughter, assault, reckless endangerment, tampering with physical evidence, abandonment of a child and acting in a manner to injure a child, according to the New York Post.

A neighbour said he heard the baby crying but did not think anything of it as the property is next

Solano County legalized home food popups. But 6 months later, chefs still can’t sell

Posted on

When Solano County approved a new California law that would legalize home-based kitchen operations in April, it seemed like Cheska Kistner’s plans to open a restaurant in her Benicia home would finally come to fruition. The measure, California’s AB 626, allows for what are known as microenterprise food businesses, which Alameda County also made inroads toward legalizing yesterday. But no Bay Area county has yet fully implemented the 2018 law, leaving entrepreneurs like Kistner in limbo.

Under AB 626, cooks can legally sell up to 30 meals a day or 60 per week from their homes when their counties opt in and they have received a permit; their annual gross sales are capped at $50,000. The law has only been implemented in one county so far, Riverside. In Alameda County, many home kitchen operations have proliferated during the pandemic without the option to get proper permitting, leading to the health

Why the Balmuda Toaster Is a Game-Changer in My Kitchen

Posted on

Sleek and minimalist in design, my Balmuda toaster has become a fixture in my home. Within minutes, croissants get warmed to buttery perfection, flaky on the outside, soft and doughy on the inside. Bagels get crisped without getting burnt and leftover pizza is revived to its original fresh-baked status. This is all due to Balmuda’s innovative steam technology, designed in Japan by Gen Terao. The key to its technology is a small teaspoon of water deposited into the toaster, where it begins to envelop around the dish, whether it’s a pastry, piece of toast, or fried chicken (I’ve honestly tried everything)—the water helps seal in moisture and flavor.

I’ve tried many toasters over the years, as well as my fair share of toaster ovens and regular ovens. My main qualms have always been the lack of consistency in settings which prevents me from achieving the perfect “toast” each and every
