In the Kitchen: Prevent the Spread of Infection.
Bacteria can spread anywhere in the kitchen. So it’s important to wash your hands and kitchen surfaces before and after making food.
The kitchen is the heart of many homes. It’s not only where the food is prepared, but it is also where the family meets to share meals and play board games together, or where the children do their homework. If not properly cleaned, the kitchen could turn into a storehouse of bacteria and germs. Keep your kitchen clean and hygienic to prevent those bacteria and germs from making you and your family sick.
- Wipe the counters and the stovetop using a paper towel with dish detergent and water. Use a fresh paper towel, then rinse the soap with clean water. Let the counters and oven dry.
- Place 1 small cup of bleach and 1 gallon of water together. Load the mixtures into a spray bottle. Spray the bleach mixture on your kitchen surfaces, and let them air dry. The bleach is killing most germs in kitchens.
- Wash cutting boards or other products that directly contact raw meat with soap and hot water, then wash in the bleach mixture again. Raw-meat juices may contaminate other foods that contact the cutting boards or plates on which the meat laid. Alternatively, put those things in the dishwasher, and wash them in the hottest water or sanitizing setting.
- Wipe the spills with a paper towel, dishwashing soap, and water in the refrigerator promptly.
- Drop the mixture into a bucket of bleach. Dip a mop into the bucket and clean your floors to avoid germs and bacteria that could have fallen off the counters as you prepare your meal.
- Upon cleaning your kitchen thoroughly wash your hands with soap and warm water to avoid any transferred germs.

- Switch the bleach for ammonia for surfaces not safe for bleach.
- Disposable paper towels are a better choice for cleaning because you remove the germs from your house. If you use cleaning rags, wash them in your washing machine immediately in the hottest water possible. If you use sponges, place them on the top rack of the dishwasher to be sanitized.
- Never mix ammonia and bleach; the mixture can create toxic fumes.
