Interior Designer vs. Interior Decorator

Posted on

If I had a dollar for every time someone mentioned hiring an interior designer when they actually meant interior decorator, I would… have enough money to hire an interior designer for my next project.

That being said, a designer is more qualified than I would need, given that my next home improvement project will be replacing the ancient, possibly possessed appliances in a beach condo.

Therein lies the rub, though: So many people think you actually do need an interior designer for any type of build or remodel project, and it’s because they have no idea what a designer actually does, whom a designer works with, or how long they need to study for the qualification. We’ll dive into the specifics here so that you never make that mistake again when your budget/project would probably be well handled by an interior decorator at a much more reasonable rate.

Award-winning Chattanooga designer offers tips on creating your dream kitchen

Posted on

When Jackie Howard gets a call for one of her award-winning kitchen designs, her first thought is, “Please, not another white kitchen.”

The founder and owner of Scarlett’s Cabinetry, Howard has spent more than 30 years making clients’ dreams for their home come true. Her designs garnered her the title of “Best of the Best” in this year’s people’s choice awards by the Chattanooga Times Free Press.

Howard has seen countless trends come and go — like white kitchens, which have endured since the 1920s, when white was about the only color on offer. The country had just come out of the Spanish flu pandemic and a gleaming white kitchen was associated with sterilization, a huge selling point at the time.

Today’s crisp white kitchens can speak of cleanliness or homeyness, elegance or minimalism. In a word, they remain timeless.

“White kitchens still sell homes,” Howard says.

What Are the Responsibilities of an Interior Designer?

Posted on

If you have a flair for design and enjoy working with people, interior design may be an ideal career choice. Interior designers use artistic elements to create living and working spaces that meet the needs of various clients. In contrast to an interior decorator, interior designers have specialized education in building codes, environmental sustainability, technological design and other physical design considerations. Interior decorators furnish a space, without advanced knowledge of artistic and mechanical design elements.

Job Description

Residential Design

If you specialize in residential interior design, you will work closely with clients to determine their needs and wants for a specific room, or an entire home. In some cases, you may provide design expertise for a new building project. You may also be called upon to help with a single indoor or outdoor living space. Most design projects involve meeting several times with clients, creating a design and providing furniture

kitchen and home living

Welcome!  Whether you are a design professional, or a decor enthusiast, we’ve got so much to share with you! A little about me. I am an interior kitchen designer living in Greenwich, Connecticut. Fairfield County, CT. , and working as a Senior Designer at Bakes & Kropp in Manhattan , NY located in the famed New York Design Center. We offer our clients Interior Kitchen Design created by their lifestyle.

Over a decade of Interior Design experience + successful projects. This is my Journal of Design.

A well-designed space makes you feel good, and yet so many people walk through their front door or go to their office, and they’re not excited or bettered by the space they’re in. Good design is a dialogue. You should affect the space you’re in, and your space should then affect you. Both positively.

I am also the Editor and
