State Farm teams up with Scarborough Fire Department to serve up kitchen safety

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and State Farm agent Michelle Raber are teaming up with the Scarborough Fire Department to support Fire Prevention Week, an annual public awareness campaign promoting home fire safety.

State Farm agents are delivering Fire Prevention Week toolkits to more than 2,500 fire departments across the country, including Scarborough. Each toolkit includes resources for Fire Prevention Week, taking place Oct. 4-10, including brochures, magnets, posters and more. The Fire Department will be sharing these resources with schools and communities this fall in support of the campaign.

This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen” focuses on cooking fire safety. Home cooking fires represent the leading cause of all fires with nearly half – 49 percent – happening in the kitchen. Unattended cooking is the leading cause of these fires.

Charlotte Ferguson Murrell loved the outdoors — gardening, raising chickens and working on the tract of land, where she and her husband, George, raised their three children.

The former pediatric nurse also loved her coffee club of friends, close for more than 30 years.

When the 54-year-old Murrell died two years ago from colon cancer, some coffee club members decided, as a memorial, to spruce up the coffee service at the Baton Rouge General Pennington Cancer Center of Bluebonnet Boulevard, where the young wife and mother had spent many hours in treatment.

Then George Murrell designated the cancer center as a place where friends and family members could make donations in his wife’s memory.

The money poured in.

“It was unlike anything we have seen,” said Erik Showalter, president of the Baton Rouge General Foundation. “Contributions came from all over the country.”

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – A new project from Partridge Creek Farm is addressing the possible food shortage stemming from the coronavirus pandemic.

Partridge Creek Farm is building garden beds at peoples homes and teaching them how to grow their own plants.

It started the Resiliency Garden Project, promoting gardening in communities across Marquette County. Partridge Creek Farm is building garden beds at peoples homes and teaching them how to grow their own plants.

For every garden bed ordered, they are hoping to donate a garden bed to someone in the community. The goal is to build 40 garden beds to help fight food insecurity in our area.

“We’re very afraid that we’re at the very end of the distribution chain, and we may see some serious shortages. So, our goal is to build a strong community, growing a lot of its own food and learning how to preserve the food
