House prices were up 3% at the end of December, index shows

Posted on

The annual house price inflation rate in the low value segment has decrease from 10.2% to 2.5%.

  • Contrary to expectations, housing prices did not “crash” during 2020, according to a new index report by Lightstone.
  • The index report shows that the mid-value segment ended 2020 at an annual house price inflation of 4.9%.
  • In the low-value segment, house price inflation has, however, decreased from 10.2% to 2.5%.

National house price inflation was 3.05% as at the end of December 2020 compared to a year earlier, according to the latest Lightstone Residential Property Index released on Monday.

House price inflation means the percentage at which house prices increased over the year in nominal terms; therefore, not taking general inflation into account.

On a provincial level, house price inflation was 3.1% in Limpopo; 5.7% in Mpumalanga; 4% in KwaZulu-Natal; 3.9% in the North West; 1.9% in Gauteng; 3.1% in the Northern

Looking for Escapist TV? Try Home Design Shows

Posted on

A few minutes into an episode of “Dream Home Makeover,” a home improvement series premiering on Netflix on Oct. 16, an anxious homeowner frets about a minor flaw in the family-room fireplace, an asymmetry that the wife describes as “pretty dramatic.”

If you’ve watched enough home improvement television, you know this scene is meant to cue the eye rolls. But Shea McGee, the show’s perky co-star and the creative force behind the Salt Lake City design firm Studio McGee, cheerfully downplays the issue, promising the couple that the half-inch error will fade into the background once their grand 7,900-square-foot home is complete.

Her down-to-earth approach soothes her clients’ nerves, but also threads a needle for Netflix, which has decided that the salve homebound Americans need right now is an escapist lineup of shows about how to make the homes we can’t escape look prettier. In recent months, the network has

If there’s one thing Braunwyn Windham-Burke needs in a house, it’s space. The Real Housewives of Orange County mama and her husband, Sean, share seven kids, so it’s a good thing they have a huge kitchen and a giant couch for family movie night. “We finally have a house that’s big enough for all of us,” she says in the video tour above, and we can practically feel her relief.

As luck would have it, Braunwyn’s glam bathroom has plenty of room, too — but not exactly for the entire family. When she pops into the loo during the video tour, she says: “I love that I finally have a bathroom that’s big enough for me

Real fire demo shows public dangers in the kitchen and how to prevent a blaze

Posted on

GOLDEN, Colo. (KDVR) — The Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC) presented a real-fire demonstration to remind people the dangers of simply preparing a meal in your kitchen.

It can happen quite literally in a flash. That’s why the DFPC teamed up with the Fairmount Fire Protection District to cook up a little demo.

“It’s important that we be safe in the kitchen,” said DFPC Section Chief Christopher Brunette.

It was the perfect place for the fire show: the Fairmount Fire Training Facility just outside Golden.

Under the watchful eyes of fire fighting professionals, fires were intentionally set in a controlled environment, all to send a message:

“Thanksgiving is our biggest day for home fires and so if we can start to illuminate those fires and teach people how to be proactive and safe in the kitchen, then we can illuminate a lot of the casualties,” Brunette said.

For Braunwyn Windham-Burke, a casual family meal requires nine seats — and that’s if one of her seven kids hasn’t invited a friend over for dinner. So, when The Real Housewives of Orange County cast member first saw the home she currently lives in, she was drawn to its huge kitchen.

While walking BravoTV.com through the California home, which she moved to back in January, the political activist said: “This is my kitchen, and this is where we spend 90 percent of our time as a family.” In the past, Braunwyn has opened up about cooking for her large crew in that very spot.

Braunwyn continued: “When we first saw the house, the thing that I

Review: The Goat Bar & Kitchen shows glitter, substance in East Village | Dining

Posted on

The Saturday-Sunday brunch menu is heavy on breakfast-style dishes, such as avocado tartine, omelets, scrambles and crepes. I have a feeling Breakfast in Paris ($15) is in our future. It includes poached eggs, avocado, bacon, goat cheese, croissant, baguette, jam and Nutella butter served on a board for sharing.

The bar menu includes 10 signature cocktails, six draft beers, eight bottles and cans and 24 wines (11 by the glass). Though the beer and wine selections are limited, the choices are good ones. It is, however, the cocktails that shine.

My wife had the Lucky Ducky, a tantalizing mix of peach vodka, peach liqueur, mango puree, lime and champagne. We now have a little rubber duck sitting on the dashboard of our automobile.

Jose was our bartender and part-time server, Chelsea was our primary server, and both were engaging, informative and efficient.

The dining room has appropriately spaced tables, as

Trial of Ebola drug shows improvement in US but is suspended in China

Posted on

The first results from an international experimental US antiviral drug are promising, even as a trial of the same drug in China shuts down.

More than half of a group of severely ill coronavirus patients from the US, Canada, Europe and Japan improved after taking remdesivir made by California-based Gilead Sciences.

Originally developed as a treatment for Ebola, the medication has been shown to fight against coronaviruses such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), which is a cousin of the new virus.

At the same time, a trial in China testing the drug in those with mild symptoms of the virus was suspended due to a lack of eligible patients.

However, some analysts believe that the trial was suspended because the drug was not proved to be effective

Nancy Pelosi Shows Off Her Kitchen During ‘Late Late Show’ Appearance While Americans Form Food Lines

Posted on

Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi showed off her kitchen during an appearance on a late night comedy show, while Americans form food lines across the country.

Pelosi appeared on Monday’s episode of “The Late Late Show” with James Corden, where she slammed President Donald Trump’s handling of COVID-19 and then showed off her ice cream collection.

Pelosi, who recently delayed a coronavirus stimulus package, accused Trump of spreading misinformation regarding COVID-19 and shared information she received from experts and scientists.

Pelosi attempted to include diversity and climate-related provisions into the coronavirus stimulus package that were unrelated to the public health crisis. Pelosi’s own version of the stimulus package included unprecedented collective bargaining powers for unions, increased fuel emissions standards for airlines and expanded wind and solar tax credits.

“I felt very responsible to speak out more clearly,” Pelosi said. “Even though we know the public wants us to work together,
